We like the Raiders! NFL Week 12 Thursday PicksPosted: November 20, 2014
Here are Will and Derek’s picks for the Week 12 Thursday night game. Picks for the remainder of the games will run on Friday.
(Home team in caps. Line per VegasInsider.com consensus.)
Kansas City (-7) at OAKLAND
Kansas City: 7-3, 2nd AFC West, #23 total offense, #12 scoring offense, #8 total defense, #2 scoring defense
Oakland: 0-10, 4th AFC West, #32 total offense, #32 scoring offense, #18 total defense, T-#27 scoring defense
Derek: Could this be … a letdown game?! Maybe. I have already declared Oakland’s first win will take place in Week 13, so we know I don’t think they’ll win. But could they cover?
Consider that the Chiefs are coming off a huge win against the Seahawks and have listened to everyone kiss their asses all week. The Raiders are playing hard, this is a home primetime game, and they could very well treat it as their Super Bowl. I think we see a spirited performance from the underdogs in Oakland tonight. Raiders cover.
Will: I don’t know why I’m so into the Raiders in this game. They’re winless, and their offense ranks dead last in yards and points. There are precious few reasons to believe in them in any way, shape, or form.
However, did you know that the Chiefs have done historically poorly against very bad teams? Per ESPN’s Adam Teicher, “They’re just 1-3 against teams 0-10 or worse.” Granted, the last such game was in 2000, and the others were in 1984, 1975, and 1962. The events of 14-plus years ago are unlikely to have any bearing on tonight’s game.
But I don’t care! I like these Raiders! The home crowd should be appropriately surly, and you never know when Alex Smith will lay a stinker on the 50-yard line. Oakland still has to deal with Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs’ running game, but I’m willing to conveniently overlook that if you are. I’m backing Oakland. Just win, maybe.
