Chiefs vs. Broncos: Week 2 Thursday PicksPosted: September 17, 2015
Here are Will and Derek’s picks for the Week 2 Thursday night game. Picks for the remainder of the games will run on Friday.
(Home team in caps. Line per VegasInsider.com consensus.)
KANSAS CITY (-3) vs. Denver
Derek: “Peyton Manning is done!” has been a popular narrative this week. He might be. But betting against Manning in primetime is pretty much a sin, even though he somehow managed to lose to Andy Dalton’s Bengals in Week 16’s Monday Night game last year. The Broncos have also won every game they’ve played against the Chiefs since Manning went to Denver, and Manning has only lost to the Chiefs once in 14 tries.
However, the Chiefs have a great pass rush and will have a great crowd in their home opener. Perhaps seeing Manning potentially on his last legs will have the Chiefs smelling blood. They’ll likely be more motivated with the knowledge that the Broncos have stomped their asses for years.
I’m leaning toward the Chiefs, but I just can’t believe Peyton is done until I see it again. I might take the Chiefs straight up, but here I’ll take the points.
Will: At risk of plagiarizing the Barenaked Ladies, it’s been one week, folks. Like you, I need more than that before deciding that one of the best quarterbacks ever is done. He’s had his neck surgery and his arm ain’t what it used to be, but what say we give him more than an hour of game time before digging his grave, eh? Besides, I’m not sure Eli is ready to be the last Manning standing just yet.
Being a supporter of a Browns team that for years has been whooped by its division rival (I’m thinking of the Steelers, but the Ravens qualify, too), I find it harder to believe in the Chiefs. They’re a very solid team, and Justin Houston and Co. figure to get in Manning’s grill, but that longtime inferiority complex is hard to shake. If Chiefs fans are anything like Browns fans — and I hope for their sake that they’re not — one backbreaker from Manning could inspire stadiumwide sphincter tightening. I’ll take the underdog Broncos as well.
