Patriots vs. Dolphins: Week 8 Thursday PicksPosted: October 29, 2015
Here are Will and Derek’s picks for the Week 8 Thursday night game. Picks for the remainder of the games will run on Friday.
(Home team in caps. Line per VegasInsider.com consensus.)
NEW ENGLAND (-8) vs. Miami
Derek: Miami has gone from laughable to frightening in just two short weeks. Dan “Vince Lombardi Tom Landry Bill Walsh” Campbell has them back to running the ball and his players don’t seem to hate him.
The Dolphins do have a tremendous advantage, and that is their defensive line against the terribly banged up Patriots offensive line. These things always somehow matter less against Bill Belichick, but it’s tough to ignore Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake versus a bunch of backups. Constant pressure is the only way to stop Brady, and the Dolphins may succeed in that area. I wouldn’t pick them to win, but I like Miami to cover.
Will: If the Dolphins win this one, I’m giving Dan Campbell my MVP vote. I completely (and arbitrarily) wrote the Dolphins off after their crap-filled loss to the Jets in London, but here they are at 3-3, threatening to climb into the playoff picture. They’ve put up 82 points in their last two games (over the Texans and Titans, but still), and the Ryan Tannehill/Lamar Miller/Rishard Matthews trio is becoming dangerously competent.
Even with Miami’s pass rush working against a patchwork Pats line, I like the Pats. They’ve only failed to cover once (although there have been two pushes, so I suppose you could also say they’re 3-3), and that one “loss” only came because of a meaningless last-minute field goal by the Jets. Miami might put a scare into ’em, but not enough of one for me to pick them.
